Paternity Test Results and How to Understand Them

Once the decision has been discussed with a doctor and it has been decided to take a paternity test, it is very important that you can fully understand the paternity test results.

GTL offers 99.99% accuracy, which allows you to be completely confident in reading your results. GTL tests 16 genetic markers to match the alleged father's DNA with the child's. In very rare cases when there are only 1 or 2 exclusions, meaning that 1 or 2 of the genetic markers do not match, further testing may be required to enable GTL to give the customer completely accurate paternity test results. However, this situation very rarely occurs and a conclusive result is reached.

Paternity Test Results in Detail

To explain this further requires going into a little more detail. It is a complex process and takes some time to ensure that completely accurate paternity test results are returned. There are many parts to the process and only highly trained staff are responsible for this process. When looking at DNA, each region of the chromosome is known as loci. As you will see in the paternity test results, the DNA testing consists of 16 loci that are tested. One of these is to check the particpants' gender and confirm it matches the information provided on the registration form. The other 15 are genetic markers for parentage analysis and are known as alleles.

The paternity test results will show 2 alleles from each locus. One will match the mother and the other should match the father. On the test results in the Direct Index show all 15 loci, which should match the father's alleles, if he is the biological father. These results are compared with a man of the same race but completely unrelated to create a percentage of the probability of the father being the biological father. This allows even more accurate results to be returned to the customer as they are effectively double tested.

Help with Paternity Test Results

There is help available if there is difficulty in understanding the paternity test results. However, the majority of these tests return to the customer completely conclusive. It is only very rare occasions when 1 or 2 alleles do not form a match, so it is not something that should be a concern. Although the process may seem very complicated, it is conducted on such a regular basis that there is a very low likelihood of mistakes being made and is simplified purely by the regularity of the process being made.

Whatever the reason for having this test, the results need to be taken seriously. The nature of certain relationships can completely change when the paternity test results arrive, so consider this when disclosing the results further. Paternity tests have become increasingly popular due to the publicity gained through chat shows that appear on daytime television. Although they are simplified and appear very regularly, they downplay the serious nature of such tests. DNA testing is not something that should be a quick decision to settle an argument. It can be a life changing situation and should be treated as such.
